“High-Performing schools are products of intentionality and teamwork!”

I was named principal of my first campus in the Spring of 2010. My first campus was labeled low performing with an “F” rating and had been on a constant academic decline for the previous four years. I had a staff I did not know, they were used to low performance, my time was limited to gain traction toward success, and the students and families of my new campus deserved our best. Where do I start? What should I do? How do I pivot if needed? There is something special about taking perfect strangers to create a high performing team through focused collaboration and accountability to results.

Storming, Norming, and Performing are the intentional action steps that I learned to navigate that made all the difference in us avoiding false starts and confusion. The process nurtures clear and open communication, team/culture building, a process for determining consensus, progress monitoring and celebrations. The most important aspect of this leadership tool is that it promotes transparency for all stakeholders. High performing schools are products of intentionality and teamwork. I see many young leaders today fall into “Told, Scold, and watch everything Unfold”, even though they have the best intentions.

Leveraging “Storming, Norming, and Performing” helped me avoid common pitfalls. Within a year's time, our campus had a complete turnaround. We accomplished phenomenal double digit gains in every subject area and accountability group, while establishing a strong culture and team efficacy.

There’s something about the ability to take vision and transform it into something tangible and meaningful that produces intended outcomes. I discovered that endless possibilities emerge when teams are immersed in a cycle of productive struggle, also known as the Storm. The Storm is necessary and is uncomfortable and does not last long because you as the leader will navigate the team through the Storm. Norming is clear and concise with the “why” being transparent for every action. Performing is measured along the way so celebrations can occur which snowballs the success.

I want to share this experience with others by being a “thought-partner” / consultant with leadership to identify the highest leverage areas to create sustained success. High performance at every campus I have led is not a mistake, but a regimented process that is fail proof. 100% graduation and college acceptance rates, academic growth and achievement measures being met, and a team of distributed leadership is on the horizon.
